Since Benjamin Franklin started the fire volunteer fire company in 1736, 73% of the firefighters in the United States TODAY are VOLUNTEERS!  Of the estimated firefighters 1,064,150 firefighters across the country, 777,350 are VOLUNTEER.  Services contributed by Volunteer Firefighters save local governments an estimated 36.8 billion dollars per year.  100% of all residents in our community receive fire protection from VOLUNTEERS.

Lima Fire Company serves an area of Middletown Township have primary jurisdictions  protecting such locations as the Granite Run Mall, Penn State Brandywine Campus, Williamson Trade School, the Elwyn Institute campus, Penncrest High School, Tyler Arboretum, a portion of Ridley Creek State Park, the Fair Acres complex, as well as a large residential and commercial area. 

There are over 25 active firefighters and EMT’s as well as an administrative and Fire Police support staff.  These members come from every part of our community and surrounding communities and come from every walk of life. They are office workers, construction workers, nurses, financial managers, school teachers, off-duty police officers, students,  and off-duty career firefighters from various municipalities…just to mention a few.

If I have no training or experience, can I still apply?

YES, no experience is necessary as we will provide training for you. We are recruiting members 16 years of age and older. We also have a Cadet program for member? ages 14 and 15.

How much time is involved?

Volunteer Firefighters must realize that it takes quite allot of time and commitment to reach the level of training and experience necessary for both their safety and the public’s safety.

Do VOLUNTEER Firefighters receive compensation?

NO, we are 100% VOLUNTEER.   Each member is covered by workers compensation and life insurance policies as required by the state, federal and municipal government at NO COST to you.

Do I have to live in Middletown Township?

NO, some of our members are residents of Middletown Township and some of our members come from other communities.

How much time is spent on training?

A new member is required to attend a basic firefighting course at NO COST to you.  Advanced training is available in firefighting, vehicle rescue, CPR, EMT, Hazardous Materials, and various other specialized training at NO COST to you.  In addition to formal training at a recognized local, state, or federal fire training center, in-house training is provided once each week.

Am I required to attend all training sessions and emergency calls?

NO, our VOLUNTEERS are provided at NO COST to you a fire pager which alerts when an emergency call is received.  Members that are available usually respond to the call.  All training sessions and company meetings are held on Tuesday nights.  It is encourage that you attend as many training sessions as you are available for.  However, it is understood that you may have other commitments on these nights.

Do I need to be at the fire station while I am on-duty?

NO, members in the area can respond to the fire station if an emergency call is received on their department issued pager.  However, our station offers many comforts for people who want to spend time at the station.  We have a state of the art crew room (TV room),  a large sleeping area (bunk room), a full kitchen, a male and female bathroom and shower area, internet computer access for students or members who need access to the internet, a weight and fitness area, and a conference room if you need some quit time!

Women in the Fire and Emergency Medical Services?

There are many women in the fire and emergency services and the Lima Fire Company is no exception.  Women are an essential part of our Company.  In fact, one of our current Fire Lieutenant’s is a female and one of our female members who served as our Assistant Fire Chief and moved on to be a paid firefighter in a large fire department!  Female members also serve on administrative posts and in our ambulance division which is commanded by a female member.

What are the benefits of becoming a VOLUNTEER member?

The benefits of being a VOLUNTEER firefighter are many.  First and foremost is the self satisfaction that you will get from helping others in their time of need.  You will have a chance to serve your community, build on your personal Resume, receive state of the art training, and you will become part of a TEAM of VOLUNTEERS joining a world wide family of fellow firefighters.
